The 3 Horse Race

If we chose only one technology class to decarbonise the grid, be that gas, renewables & storage or nuclear, the “winner” depends on where you draw the finish line. However, if you think about the ‘race’ to decarbonise the grid more like a team sport, you will need lots of different players with different skills to complete your team – you get a much better result. Decarbonising the electricity grid at the lowest Total System Cost will take a team of technologies.

Cement 101

So, confused about what the difference is between cement and concrete?

Concrete and cement are not the same materials. Concrete, a building and construction material, is from a mixture of cement, crushed stone/gravel, sand, and water. Cement is a powder that acts as a binder.

Cement 102

Apart from limestone, what else can cement be made from? Or what are some of the clinker substitute materials?

As clinker is the element within cement responsible for the majority of both its cost and carbon emissions, reducing the clinker content (also known as the clinker factor) of cement has the dual benefit of lowering both the cost of its production and its environmental impact.

Cement 103

Can carbon capture and storage help reduce emissions from cement manufacturing?

There are four possible pathways where CCS can help reduce cement emissions, direct separation / indirect calcination, oxyfuel, calcium looping and solvent based capture processes.

Hydrogen 101

Hydrogen is a hot topic - to help understand the technology a little more (or help out a colleague) this is the first in our series of infographics exploring hydrogen.
Here is a great infographic for your library or lunch room wall!

Wind Turbine Efficiency

Animation:  Wind turbines extract energy from the passing air and so slow down the wind passing through them.  For a wind turbine to extract 100% of the energy it would need to stop all the wind.
